Venticinque anni fa, il 27 giugno 2000 (WHOIS riporta Creation Date: 2000-06-27T21:31:59Z) acquistavo il dominio wwww.altopianodipine.com dalla società canadese DotEasy a 30$/anno (dollari americani) e offriva gratuitamente l'email, l'accesso via ftp e lo spazio web di 20MB (sufficiente per ospitare tutte le pagine statiche del sito e le poche immagini presenti) senza banner pubblicitari.


Perchè acquistai un .com e non un .it?
Fino al 1999 occorreva avere la partita IVA per poter registrare un dominio .it (e se ne poteva acquistare uno solo), nel 2000 anche un privato cittadino senza partita IVA poteva registrarlo ma la procedura era molto burocratica. Prevedeva la compilazione di moduli cartacei tra i quali la LAR - lettera di assunzione responsabilità - dove si dichiarava che si aveva titolo per usare quel nome di dominio e tutto doveva essere inviato tramite fax. Si doveva anche inviare via fax la ricevuta di pagamento (bollettini postali o bonifico).

Un iter complesso (a volte occorreva inviare nuovamente il fax perchè risultava illegibile) e quel "dimostrare che si aveva il titolo per registrare il dominio" scoraggiava gli appassionati come me a procedere.

Quell'iter l'avevo già seguito nel 1999 per registrare il dominio www.gsttn.it per conto della società per la quale lavoravo (Gruppo Soluzioni Tecnologiche) e proprio per le difficoltà riscontrate lasciai perdere.

Per registrare il dominio .com con DotEasy bastava compilare un semplice modulo online che terminava col pagamento tramite carta di credito.
In pochi minuti ho fatto la procedura, ho pagato e dopo qualche giorno avevo trasferito il sito su DotEasy nel nuovo e facilmente memorizzabile www.altopianodipine.com
DotEasy offriva web hosting gratuito senza pubblicità una rarità in quanto ad esempio Geocities offriva si lo spazio gratuitamente ma in cambio si dovevano ospitare i loro banner.
Piccola curiosità: DotEasy è stata fondata nel giugno del 2000, pertanto fui tra i primi clienti che acquistarono il dominio da loro.
Ecco il testo dell'email che ricevetti da domain.in2net.com alle 23.32.10 del 27/06/2000: Dear Andrea Nardon,

Congratulations! Registration for altopianodipine.com has been completed. Your domain name should show up in the InterNic root WHOIS database and visible on the Internet within the next 48 hours.

The domain registration fee will be processed by in2net network inc in Canadian funds.

Thank you for registering your domain name with in2net network inc.

Si congratulavano con me per aver registrato il sito (in effetti all'epoca registrare un dominio era ancora un evento speciale...)

Due giorni dopo (29/06/2000 03:35:37) arrivò anche l'email da parte di 29/06/2000 03:35:37 dove mi confermavano l'attivazione dello spazio web.

Once you have created a homepage, you can upload it to your web site using your favourite FTP program such as WS-FTP and CuteFTP (for Windows) and Fetch (for Mac). Many web page composers come with FTP/web-publishing function that fulfils the upload purpose just as well. The required information (listed below) is the same, whichever program you may choose to use.

Note: Before uploading your homepage, make sure the initial page is named "index.html". Your uploaded initial page can be viewed at http://www.yourdomain.com/ OR http://www.yourdomain.com/index.html. Any other page linked to the "index" page can be named according to what you like. Remember the location of your files on your system to facilitate your upload process.

1. Launch your FTP program or the web-publishing function in your web page composer
2. The FTP Host Name/Address/Location is ftp.yourdomain.com
3. Set the Host Type to Automatic Detect, if any
4. The Login/User ID is the same as the Member ID (lower case only) that you specified at sign-up
5. Enter the Password (case sensitive) that you chose when signing up for Doteasy
6. After login, you are ready to upload your files. From your local computer, upload the files associated with your homepage to the remote server. When the transfer is complete, people will immediately be able to access your page on the web
7. If you edit a file, upload it to the remote server so that the updated page will appear on the web


Email Accounts Management (Web-based)

A site administrator can use regular email functions as well as access administrative options by logging onto Doteasy's home page.

Log in using this email address format: memberID@yourdomain.com; then provide your password.

*To add a user:
1. From the pull-down menu, select User Administration. The first time you access Admin Options, only the administrator's user
name is displayed. DO NOT DELETE your own user name.
2. Click Add. Enter new user information.
3. Click Save to add the user. The user ID is added to the list
of registered users.

Any users you have added can now receive mail with an email client
or on the web. The newly created email address will be
User@yourdomain.com. Only one administrator is allowed; therefore,
all new users are regular users and do not have administrative
privileges.

*To Display, Modify or Delete a User Mail Account
1. From the pull-down menu, select User Administration.
2. Select a user from the User List. Select:
a. Delete - to delete the user
b. Display - to view the user's account properties, user attributes and mailbox status
c. Change Password - to change the password for the selected user
d. Modify User Account - to change a user's account properties

*To Add, Display, Modify, or Delete an Alias
An alias is not a true, accessible email account. Any mail sent to an Alias will be forwarded to a valid email account you specify. There is no default alias. You can create as many aliases as you like. No alias can be the same as an existing user name.

1. From the pull-down menu, select Alias Administration.
2. Click Add. Enter the Alias ID and specify the destination. When people write to alias@yourdomain.com, the mail will automatically be forwarded to the address you have specified.
3. Select an alias from the list.
Choose:
a. Display - to view alias properties
b. Modify - to make and save changes made to selected alias
c. Delete - to delete the selected alias from the list

Retrieve Email (POP Access)

In order to set up your email client (e.g. Netscape Mail, Outlook, Eudora, etc.) and retrieve email from our email server, the following parameters will be required:

POP Server (Incoming Mail Server): mail.yourdomain.com
SMTP Server (Outgoing Mail Server): Your Internet Access Provider SMTP server
POP or Email Login User Name: user%yourdomain.com ("user" is the Member ID you specified at sign-up)

Retrieve Email (Web-based Access)

Other than from your email client, your email can also be accessed
at Doteasy's web site.

1. Type in your full email address (user@yourdomain.com) and password to access your email account.
2. A pull-down menu will show all the Account Options and Admin Options available. Admin Options will be accessible only by a site administrator.
3. Under Account Options, you can do a wide range of tasks such as setting your preferences, changing forwarding info and passwords, editing your address book, creating folders, and setting your auto-responder, etc.
4. The administrator and all regular users (created by the administrator) can access Account Options.
5. Each email account is given 10MB of storage space.

Note: Mail retrieved with an email client will be downloaded from our server. As a result, these downloaded messages will not appear in your Inbox when you access your email account via the web. Mail placed in other folders (that you created) will not be downloaded. If you want all your mail to be downloaded from the web to your POP client, place your mail in the Inbox and retrieve messages using your POP client.

Nei giorni successivi creai diverse pagine e sistemai quelle recuparate dal precedente spazio web. Iniziai anche a registrare sulle diverse guide on-line il sito col nuovo indirizzo, ed inviai decine di email a giornali, associazioni, comuni, etc con questo testo:

Dal 31 luglio 2000 è attivo all'indirizzo http://www.altopianodipine.com il sito internet dell'Altopiano di Pinè, uno spazio virtuale dedicato alla gente dei comuni di Baselga di Pinè, Bedollo e Sover.

Il sito internet vuole essere un riferimento, una guida, un punto di incontro e di collegamento tra le tante iniziative che coinvolgono l'Altopiano di Pinè, che spesso ignorano l'una l'esistenza dell'altra, e nello stesso tempo essere fonte di informazioni utili sia per chi vive sull'Altopiano di Pinè, sia per chi ha deciso di trascorrerci parte del suo tempo.

È stato scelto di creare un sito internet e non un manuale cartaceo perché l'obiettivo è realizzare un qualcosa di dinamico, sempre attuale e aggiornato e pronto per il futuro telematico che ci aspetta e che sta invadendo il nostro vivere quotidiano. Uno spazio web visibile in tutto il mondo e accessibile a tutti, esperti e profani (chi non conosce qualcuno che sa navigare in Internet, magari il figlio o il nipote).

Non è ancora completo e non ha pretesa di esserlo: è un'idea in parte realizzata, ma c'è ancora molto da fare ed il successo dipende dal risalto e dall'opinione che la gente, le associazioni e le istituzioni daranno a questa proposta. Ogni segnalazione contribuirà alla crescita di questo sito e nello stesso tempo farà risaltare le iniziative segnalate sempre di più, creando una vera e propria rete civica, al servizio della gente.
